In Berlin, an eco-friendly supermarket only sells package-free goods
Original Unverpackt is a supermarket which guarantees no packaging and where everything is bought in bulk.
The supermarket has chosen to play its part in the eco movement: removing from its aisles all products with packaging, and selling all liquid and solid products by weight.
Customers come to the store with their own bags, receptacles and bottles. For customers who don’t have any, the supermarket has its own deposit system: they lend containers for a few euros, which are then returned to the customer if they bring the containers back on their next visit.
Despite this strong commitment, the establishment has not reduced the range of products on offer, with nearly 350 products distributed around the area of about 70m2. As a result, health products and alcohol are stocked in large barrels, shampoo is kept in a ten-litre container with a tap, toothpaste comes in pastilles…
The supermarket fits in with two major contemporary trends: a conscious effort to reduce food waste, and the desire to avoid buying more than necessary for economic reasons.
