In Cologne, an outdoor sports shopping centre where clients try out products in real conditions
A German shopping centre, specialised in outdoor sports, is allowing customers to try out products in real conditions.
Globetrotter Koln is a shopping centre dedicated to open air sports, located in Cologne in the west of Germany. Occupying a surface area of 7,000m2, it fills four floors and offers a very wide range of products (600 brands and 25,000 articles).
The Globetrotter in Cologne innovates and allows products to be tested in real situations. On the ground floor there’s a 4.3 metre deep lake, allowing people to try diving and canoe equipment.
A cave with constant, artificial, light rain lets people test the impermeability of tents or waterproofs. A climbing wall, a cold room and a dark corridor are all available to try out the effectiveness of torches.
To highlight the nature and adventure aspect, Globetrotter also houses an ant farm, and an aquarium full of jellyfish. The soundtrack in the store is of birdsong and insects chirping, giving customers a real sense of being in the middle of nature.
Globetrotter goes beyond simply offering role-play situations for its products. It also has a restaurant, a travel agency specialised in trekking, a diving school, a specialist travel library, as well as a doctor’s surgery which specialises in tropical diseases.
This concept has enjoyed immediate success and even won the Euroshop Retail Design Award in 2008.
