In London, a hotel offers its clientele access to a private club
Shoreditch House is a hotel and private members club, offering customers the chance to take advantage of its facilities: swimming pool, sauna, gym, conference rooms...all year round. Club membership is earned by nomination from two existing members.
There are more than 100 private clubs in London. These old gentlemen’s clubs centre around different points of interest and offer a number of activities: from horse-riding to stocks and shares. They also offer houses and luxury restaurants that are only available to club members. Shoreditch House opened in 2007 as part of the House Seven (which includes Soho House) private clubs network. It’s a traditional private members club with an unusual method of joining: hotel customers can access the same facilities as club members. There’s a spa, gym, restaurant, terrace, swimming pool and gardens, lounges and bars: plenty for hotel customers and potential club members to do. Access to the very privileged world of English private clubs provides a sophisticated, top-of-the-range hotel experience. In a renovated 1930s building, there are 26 bedrooms with a personal, confidential service. Rules are strict: no photos, no mobile phones and just one guest per member. Shoreditch House welcomes young entrepreneurs who are looking for a friendly yet quiet work area, as well as businessmen on holiday. Rooms vary between $125 and $265 a night, depending on the size, which ranges from Tiny to Small.
Exclusive and unique, the club understandably keeps a low online profile. While the website offers customers the opportunity to book a room, there is little mention of access to the clubs and the privileges that come with membership. Reservations are made online through the hotel’s website, with different formulas depending on your status (member or not). The hotel has scored highly on various renowned travel sites: a 2014 certificate of excellence and 4/5 from more than 100 reviews on Tripadvisor, same goes for the 60 reviews on Yelp. Some sites, such as Hotels We Love and TinyTravellersTopTen, also praise the hotel.
With more than 20,000 likes on their Facebook page (only available to members), Shoreditch House has become very popular, underlining the appeal of luxury and exclusivity.
