In London, outdoor ashtrays are being used as advertising space
In July 2007, the UK took a big step and changed the law, making it illegal to smoke in public places. For smokers that are now required to smoke outdoors, pubs and cafés in London have installed bin-shaped ashtrays on their pavements... sponsored by local businesses. And why not make use of this great advertising space that will be seen by thousands?
However, the ban on smoking in public places has not cured smokers of their addiction and they still need a place to smoke. Owners of these establishments have been given free outdoor ashtrays where companies can display their ads, for smokers to use. Over 20,000 ashtrays of this kind have been installed to date.
The major advantage of this initiative is that local businesses can now attract customers from their area. They can choose the location of their ashtray ads and have more control over who is seeing their advertisements, meaning less money is wasted on promotions displayed miles away which are not very cost-effective. The opportunity to place an advert in a highly visible location for a reasonable price is particularly attractive for small businesses.
