The ‘Café Charles’ stand owner at the Marciac Jazz Festival reduces a customer’s bill when they order politely.

In Marciac, the Gers department of France, a café rewards polite customers

Patrick Laubignat has become quite famous, purely by accident! In less than 24 hours, his blackboard was shared on Facebook more than 25,000 times. By copying an idea he had spotted two years earlier, his café sign now reads “Coffee €2.00, Coffee Please €1.80!!!”

The shopkeeper admits: “it’s more of a tax on rudeness as the coffee already costs €1.80”. The idea had an instant impact on the politeness of customers and the stand’s friendly vibe.

It’s a simple strategy that has been copied the world over with a range of drinks and in every language.
