In Lyon, a bar offers self-service beer
On a night out, getting the barman's attention isn’t always easy. The KoloK bar in Lyon has introduced a KoloK card which you can top up to then use the self-service beer taps which serve pints or halves. The card is placed on the reader to calculate your credit in real time.
French people consume an average of 30 litres of beer per year, per person, which ranks 41st in the biggest beer drinkers in the world (Source: 20minutes).
Beer bars are especially popular with students, who appreciate beer at a reasonable price. In Lyon, la KoloK has come up with an innovative concept: as well as offering self-service beer, your order is managed through a rechargeable card. You simply need to order a card and top it up to the necessary amount. The beer taps on the tables make it possible to pour your drinks and work out your intake and remaining credit in real time on the screen. The card is placed on the stand and is detected by the machine. It also allows you to pay for other purchases, such as burgers, sharing dishes, cocktails, Jager Bombs, etc. With your name on it, the card can be recharged at any moment, and there is no minimum. A litre of beer costs €7.60, which means €1.90 a beer, and a burger is €10. The bar is close to the universities in Lyon and is a popular place with students.
The atmosphere is particularly warm. Comments left on Lyon’s entertainment guide Le Petit Paumé give it a 4.5 out of 5. On Yelp, the establishment gets 4 out of 5. La Kolok has more than 1000 fans on Facebook.
