In Zanzibar, the Manta Resort Hotel has built a room entirely submerged beneath the ocean's surface. Architect Mikael Genberg is the man responsible. The Underwater Room offers an unforgettable experience for paying customers.

In Zanzibar: a hotel with an underwater room

The archipelago of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean, generates 75% of its wealth through tourism (Source: Slate). With that sort of tourist boom, luxury hotels are being built all the time, with nearly 150 on the two main islands, Pemba and Unguja.

image022Since January 2014, on the island of Pemba, the Manta Resort hotel offers an exceptional room. Located 250 metres off the coast in the middle of the ocean, a tiny island, attached to several anchors, holds a room on two floors for two people, the Underwater Room. The main deck serves as the living area, as well as a kitchen and bathroom; a ladder then allows tourists to reach the upper deck to go diving, sunbathing, or simply admire the ocean. The bedroom is on the lower deck, four metres underwater. The large windows allow guests to admire the marine fauna 360 degrees around the room, day and night thanks to spotlights on the windows. Coral has started to settle on the structure. Guests can admire the octopi stuck to the windows, Spanish dancers, manta rays and seabats. A night for two people costs $1500.

image024The hotel asked for help from Genberg Underwater hotels, a Swedish company which has created similar structures in lakes. As well as having a 2014 certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor, the establishment has scored 4.5 out of 5 from 204 marks with lots of complimentary comments. Online magazines such as Gizmag and Yatzer have praised this exceptional site. The hotel’s promotional video on YouTube has been watched more than 450,000 times. The hotel’s presence on social media is more proof of its success: 6,000 fans on Facebook and 2,000 followers on Twitter. Hotel guests can combine diving, relaxation and discovery on this atypical getaway.
